Belief is that complicated thing within us that can lead us positively through life or can be the main factor that sticks us in places that we really don’t want to be.
Beliefs are generally ‘an acceptance that something exists or is true, especially without proof’ (to quote the Oxford Dictionary) We develop these beliefs through many ways such as education, teaching, circumstance and more importantly from our own perceptions. A belief can come into being by repeating something often enough that you believe it to be true.
Can you relate to that idea? Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought, ‘I can’t get a new job’ (or something equally self-criticising) and then begun a cycle of thinking it every time you look in the mirror? Each time that you think that thought, you make it stronger and you create the belief that ‘you can’t…’, even though you have no proof or evidence other than your own thinking.
It doesn’t have to be this way. You don’t have to get stuck in a downward spiral of believing that you can’t, shouldn’t, couldn’t and don’t. You CAN and WILL change the way you create beliefs and change the ones that you have to enable you to move forward.
As the quote above says;
Believe that you can and you’re half way there
– Theodore Roosevelt
Once you have chucked those beliefs that you can’t do something you are half way to getting to where you want to be. The biggest battle is turning your beliefs about yourself into ones that will help and not hinder you.
Ways you can do this is by turning your thinking around. When you feel those limiting beliefs creeping into your mind, stop. Take a minute to notice them and to realise that there is no proof to say that is true. This also goes for beliefs that are put onto you by other people – they do not have the right to change your beliefs as they are yours and only yours! Realise that they are not true and change them to something that you know is true; that you can do ANYTHING that you put your mind to.
Creating a bank of positive and empowering beliefs is the first step towards setting goals and driving your life forward in the direction that you want it to go. Perhaps you are finding it hard to create that good place because of years of drowning in beliefs that have had no good effect on you. This next little exercise will act as a small reminder as to why you can believe in yourself and how you can bring your self-belief into a place that will drive you forward. The only side effect of the exercise is a boost in self-confidence and personal empowerment – what have you got to lose? (other than your limiting beliefs!) 😉
Grab some paper, pens and pencils.
On the paper, write all of your strengths. Your greatest achievements. Your positive experiences in life. Write down EVERYTHING that comes to mind and then add 5 more to the list.
Look at the list. Can you see some amazing things about yourself? Of course you can! There is a wealth of strengths and achievements inside you, you just misplace them in your mind and let them get clouded by limiting beliefs that tell you that you can’t.
Obviously, you can! And you have done it in the past. You can most certainly do it again now! You just need to believe that you can.
Now that you have seen your strengths, I want you to create some new beliefs that you are going to build into your everyday life.
Choose a belief that has been limiting you in the past and something that you want to work on and change e.g. ‘I can’t lose weight’ and change it to ‘I CAN lose weight’ and write it in big creative lettering onto a piece of paper. Stick it somewhere that you will see regularly, make it into a screen saver for your computer, background for your phone and reminder that goes off from your calendar every day. Start to repeat it to yourself every single day and it will begin to grow into a new positive belief.
Repeat the process with other beliefs that you have.
Think of the beliefs as seeds, if you feed them they grow and if you leave them they die. What will you do with your limiting beliefs and what will you do with your newly seeded ones?
You control the journey of your life and NOW is the time to start making it happen.
